What do we
need to know about this issue?
“I do not
want to leave you, brethren, in ignorance about spiritual gifts” (1 Cor 12.1).
What did
Christ give people when he ascended to heaven?
“Therefore
it is said: “He ascended on high, took captive captives (literally: he took
captives captive) and gave gifts to people” ”( Eph 4.8).
What were
these gifts?
“And He
appointed some as apostles, others as prophets, others as Evangelists, others as
shepherds and teachers” (v.11).
What other
gifts are mentioned in Scripture?
“And God
appointed others in the Church, firstly as apostles, secondly as prophets,
thirdly as teachers; further, to others he gave miraculous powers, also gifts
of healings, help, management, different languages” (1 Cor 12.28).
Why did God
endow the church with spiritual gifts?
“For the
perfection of the saints, for the work of service, for the building up of the
body of Christ… that we should no longer be babies, tossed to and fro, and
carried away by every wind of doctrine, through the craftiness of men, through
the cunning art of deceit, but by true love we would return all to Him Who is
the head Christ” (Eph 4.12,14-15).
Where
should the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the church lead?
“Until we
all come to the perfection of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a
perfect man, to the measure of the full stature of Christ” (Eph 4.13).
How can
unity be maintained with such a diversity of gifts?
“The gifts
are different, but the Spirit is the same“ (1 Cor 12.4).
Why is the
church given the manifestation of the gifts of this one Spirit?
“But to
each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the benefit: to one is given
by the Spirit the word of wisdom, to another the word of knowledge, by the same
Spirit; to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; miracles to another,
prophecy to another, discernment of spirits to another, tongues to another,
interpretation of tongues to another” (v.7-10).
Who directs
the distribution of the gifts of the Holy Spirit?
“All these
things are produced by one and the same Spirit, dividing to each one individually,
as He pleases” (v.11).
Did God
plan for everyone to have the same gifts?
“Are all
Apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers? Does
everyone have gifts of healing? Does everyone speak in tongues? Are all
interpreters?“ (v.29-30).
Will the
gifts of the Holy Spirit be sent to people forever?
“And
prophecy will cease, and tongues will be silent, and knowledge will be
abolished” (1 Cor 13.8).
When will
there no longer be a need for special talents?
“When the perfect (new world) comes, then that which is in part will cease” (v.10).
