How many
commandments do you have to break to become a lawbreaker?
“Whoever
keeps the whole law and sins in one point, he becomes guilty of everything. For
the same one who said, "Do not commit adultery", also said,
"Thou shalt not kill"; Therefore, if you do not commit adultery, but
kill, then you are also a transgressor of the law” (James 2.10-11).
Note. “The
Ten Commandments are not ten different laws. They are combined into a single
law. If a person is hung in the air with a chain consisting of ten links, and
he breaks one of them, he will fall to the ground in the same way as if he had
broken all ten. If it is forbidden to go beyond certain limits, then it does
not matter where exactly this prohibition will be violated” (D.L. Moody,
Weighed and Wanting [1898], p.119).
"The
Ten Commandments of Sinai were not independent commandments, but ten facets of
the one God's Law" (G. Campbell Morgan, The Ten Commandments [1901 ed.],
p.11).
“Because he
(a member of the Methodist Church) loves God, he keeps His commandments, not
individual commandments or most of them, but all - from the smallest to the
greatest. He is not content with keeping the whole law while breaking one of
its commandments. He keeps it completely, and his conscience is clear before
God and before men” (John Wesley, The Character of Methodist. Works, vol.8
[1830], p.344).
How did
Christ rebuke the Pharisees?
“And he
answered and said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God
for the sake of your tradition? For God commanded: "Honor your father and
mother"; and: "He who speaks evil of his father or mother, let him
die the death". But you say: if someone says to his father or mother: "Gift
to God, what would you use from me", he may not honor his father or his
mother; thus you have made void the commandment of God by your tradition” (Matt
15.3-6).
How did
Christ evaluate their religion?
“But in
vain do they worship Me, teaching doctrines, the commandments of men” (v.9).
Can a
person know God without keeping His commandments?
“He who says, "I have come to know Him", but does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and there is no truth in him“ (1 John 2.4).
